Description

In the Sa'dan community, women play a vital role in the spiritual activity of weaving. They employ two weaving techniques, "Ikat" and non-ikat, with the former using colors sourced from nature. Red is derived from Mengkudu roots and Areca nuts, blue comes from Tarum leaves, and black is obtained from bilangte leaves. Tana Toraja, in South Sulawesi, is home to around 32 indigenous groups, including the Sa'dan community known for their weaving. Additionally, other communities in Toraja specialize in carving (Kesu), coffee production (Pangala and Tikala), and Toraja is recognized for its distinctive colors—red, white, yellow, and black—which represent different aspects of human life in the Aluk To Dolo belief system.
